I have been fortunate enough to have this internship, beginning next month, for a full year now. When I first went to the interview, I was aware that my Writing minor would be put to good use, as I would be doing a lot of editing for my supervisors company, Learning Works For Kids, and many other projects, but everything else that I have learned I was not aware of at the time. My experience here has been an amazing one, and I have learned more about the world of Psychology, Therapy and Psychiatry than I would have ever thought. I learned more about the behind-the-scenes things, such as the insurance aspect of it, the rules and regulations of confidentiality, how to refer someone to what/who they are looking for, matching patients with the right therapist for them, the process of psychological evaluations, and even about the medicine and prescription aspect of psychiatry. Working with a number of different therapists, a psychologist, and a psychiatrist, I can properly refer someone to whom they are looking for when they call in, whether they just want counseling, an evaluation, or possibly someone to prescribe medication. |
I believe this knowledge to be extremely helpful in knowing where I possibly want to end up in 10 years. A Licensed Mental Health Counselor and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist would be two possible long-term goals, but for now, helping those who are diagnosed with learning disabilities after their evaluations would be of great importance. I see these children coming in everyday and often wonder what I could do to help them. There are numerous tutoring and learning centers throughout the country that cater to these children's growing needs, and being apart of this long process would be ideal. I can see myself working for a nonprofit organization such as CHADD that caters to familys and children with ADD/ADHD or even working in a school with children who have learning disabilities Either or, I am thankful for the opportunities I had at South County Child and Family Consultants. |
