During the class we took in conjunction with our internships, we were asked to create a document called a Learning Contract, which basically outlined what we hoped to accomplish, and what our internship was in general. It was an interesting task, to have to think ahead to things I want to learn and know that I could, but it was important nonetheless. We had to outline 3 goals that we hoped to accomplish, and my first goal is something that I think even though it took some time, was extremely beneficial. Since most days I took paperwork from parents and teachers as well as the children/clients themselves and scored and printed their results, I got to learn a lot about what each test actually does. There are many different kinds that test and look at a variety of different things. Some are quite comprehensive and take almost 2 hours to administer, like the WISC-IV (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children) and WPPSI-IV (Wecshler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence), and others are on a laptop and involve fun and more interactive testing like the AWMA (Automated Working Memory Assessment). By grading these, going back to check that the scoring was done correctly, and having to enter them into a computer, I now can see what low or high scores mean for that child and what areas lead to what diagnosis. Usually, certain tests with certain scores will definitely lead to an ADD or an ADHD diagnosis, and I now know the difference between the attentive and inattentive types in relation to their scores. To the right is a list of tests that I am constantly working with, scoring and inputting so the results may be used in the clients final evaluation report, which is sent to the parent and if we have a Release of Information (ROI), to the clients pediatrician/PCP and/or their schools. |
